Wood Flooring, Wooden Furniture, Wood Panelling: How to Make an All-Wood Aesthetic Work

Using the same wood tone throughout your space can make your home look flat. This is the last thing that you need. If you want to change that then you need to focus on having a layered look that looks lived-in. You also need to make sure that you are using wood tones that not only complement each other, but that also contrast each other. Find out more about that here.

Find your Dominant Wood Tone

If you have luxury vinyl flooring down already, then this will most likely be your dominant wood tone. If you do not have luxury vinyl click flooring yet, then you need to instead go off your biggest piece of furniture. Your cabinets or even your dining table would be the best option here. When you have done this, you need to introduce some kind of contrast. Contrast is fine, and it is what you should be going for at the end of the day. Mixing a very light wood with a darker wood will look intentional. If you want to make things easier then opt for light wood, medium wood, and dark wood. Just make sure that you don’t get a dark wood, and then a slightly lighter wood. The wood will look too similar, and it won’t look as good.

Match the Undertones

When you have done the above, you then need to match your undertones. When you look at the colours of wood that are out there, you will soon see that walnut is the most versatile. Walnut is such a great undertone, and it can go any way you want depending on the stain that you have and the colours that you choose to pair it with. When you have done this, make sure that you focus on other undertones. If you know that you have a dominant wood tone of warm oak then accent this by adding other warm colours. You can get away with using all-pale wood tones if you want to go for a more peaceful look, but you do need to be specific about your style if you want to pull it off.

Repetition is Important

Part of what makes a room look truly cohesive is repetition. When you choose to mix wood tones, you have to make sure that every wood tone can be seen at least twice. When you pair wood tones, it may be that you choose something small, like a fruit bowl or even a frame. You then need to make sure that you avoid cluttering the wood tones in a single area too. This will help you to ensure that you bring everything together nicely. If you have reclaimed wood then think about it as being a raw edge or an accent. They can help you to marry lots of wood tones together.

Visible Grain is a good thing

If you have luxury vinyl click flooring and it has a visible grain then this is a good thing. Visible grain can help your space to feel way more rustic and it can also make it feel super casual as well. Smaller wood grains can make your rooms feel polished or somewhat formal. Not sure how to get that right balance? Why not opt for a mixture of both? This is a great way for you to ensure that you do not go for too much of the same thing. It will also make it easier for you to add to the room as time goes on, as you won’t be boxed in as much.
