When people say “ Morgan Freeman,” what is the first impression that comes to you? We are sure you are thinking about a guy with black gloves arriving for red carpet events or at the Oscars in 2025. This sparked conversation from a lot of people, as the crowd was unable to decode the look for ages. The answer actually dates back two decades.

Accidents are no joke, fam

Insights from Parade reveal that Freeman met with a major accident in 2008 in Mississippi that flipped his life. His car was overturned while he was driving home, and then he suffered a broken arm and shoulder in a car crash.

At first, the doctors treating Freeman thought that his hand and shoulders were treatable but later discovered the injury deep dived into his nerves. This made his left hand immobile, and now he is forced to perform everyday tasks with his right hand.

Fibromyalgia can be a slow hell

The 2008 crash didn’t just leave Freeman’s left hand immobile — it also set off a second, separate condition: fibromyalgia. According to Lin Health, Freeman has spoken in interviews about a fibromyalgia diagnosis that followed the accident, alongside the severe nerve damage in his left arm. The two aren’t the same thing: the nerve damage is what causes the immobility itself, while fibromyalgia is a separate, long-term pain condition that causes widespread musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, and sleep and mood issues, according to the Mayo Clinic. Physical trauma, including car accidents, is one of the events researchers have linked to fibromyalgia’s onset.

During an interview with Esquire in 2012, Freeman openly spoke about his medical condition. He described the pain as excruciating, and said it’s kept him from playing golf the way he used to — he now has to play right-handed, which he’s called uncomfortable.

Reports from the Cleveland Clinic say that people who are unable to utilise their left hand are generally associated with Fibromyalgia. It’s a type of chronic disorder that can cause you severe flare-ups, and it provides you with moments of relief.

During an interview with Esquire in 2012, Freeman openly spoke about his medical condition. He expressed that the pain was excruciating, and he is unable to play golf, which makes him sad. He now has to play golf with his right hand, which is extremely uncomfortable.

The gloves are a relief

All his public appearances are with his black gloves, though it has now become a fashion statement, but it is worn strictly for medical purposes. Yahoo reports that Morgan started wearing the black glove just after the car accident, but after that, he attended all public events with his iconic black gloves. These are basically compression gloves that help keep his pain in check.

Getting facts straight

Report after report confirms that Freeman did not lose his hand but suffered major nerve damage, leaving his left hand largely immobile. He wears compression gloves to manage the pain and swelling that comes with it. The 2008 crash also had legal consequences: according to CBS News, Freeman’s passenger, Demaris Meyer, filed a negligence lawsuit against him over the accident, which was settled out of court. Freeman was never charged with driving under the influence.

The passenger (Demaris Meyer ) who was in the car filed a federal lawsuit saying that he was drunk when the incident happened. Though Freeman was not charged with DUI (Driving Under the Influence)  or federal lawsuits, the case was settled after court.

Controversy  turned into a well-documented medical condition

For years, people have made all sorts of assumptions about his hand, but now it’s known that it is a medical condition that is in action. It’s commendable how Freeman has turned his life around despite such permanent damage to his nerve. He still takes up regular roles and continues to make public appearances as if nothing ever happened.
